It is hard enough to get visitors to your website in the first place. Is it worth the risk of losing them because you haven't taken a few basic steps?Surfers (me included) are generally an impatient bunch and won't hesitate to click the back button if they arrive at your site and experience errors and/or arrive at pages that cannot be found.
They are more likely to be forgiving if the errors still exist AND they are greeted with an informative message as to where they can find the information they seek rather than a page that simply states: NOT FOUND.

If you are running a dynamic website, it is not enough to simply backup your database to a directory on your Web server. You should save copies of your database backup and changed files elsewhere on a regular basis.
